“Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.” Nhat Hanh
As a kid I used to love playing on the escalators in the department stores. My favorite thing to do was to run up the escalator that was going down. You really had to move quickly to make it all the way to the top, moving in the opposite direction of the ever-moving stairs. If you rested, even for a moment, you were carried right back down to the bottom.
Life can be like walking up the “down” escalator. You’ve got to be constantly moving. It takes effort just to stay in the same place. And if you want to get ahead, then you really have to move, quickly and consistently, because the gravity of life is always pushing against you, resisting your efforts to make progress.
It doesn’t have to be like this. There is another way, where the stairs don’t move and the pace is not frenetic. Rather than always moving, trying to get ahead, learn to be fully in the moment. So often we sacrifice the present in exchange for a better tomorrow, one that may never come. Learn to enjoy the moment and you will experience life more fully than most people ever do.
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.” Eckhart Tolle
“Happiness is the sense that nothing is missing in this moment.” Naval Ravikant
