No one gets to live a life unscathed by sadness and pain. It can be tempting to look back upon the scars of life and wish that circumstances were different, better. Some might wish to change an abusive parent, others would erase the death of a loved one. And others might rewrite history to eliminate the many lonely days and nights.
I would argue it’s better to make peace with the past than to wish it away. Every experience preceding this present moment played a part in shaping you to be the person you are today. From adversity comes perspective and strength. If life were easier in your past, you would be less than the person you are right now.
Embrace the past, with all its messiness and pain, because it made you who you are. Uniquely you, unlike anyone else in this world. And remember, you are not a captive of your past. As Carl Jung said,
“I am not what has happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”
